SEATTLE START-UP & ALUMNI VISIT

Students from the 2018-2019 cohort have the pleasure of visiting tech leaders, start-up companies, & alumni in the Greater Seattle Area during the fist week of September. The students will be visiting companies like Microsoft, Rover, SkyTap, Amazon, OfferUp, and Tableau. In addition to industry tours, Frank Scholar alumni will get to know the current cohort better during a reception at Lucky Strike. The scholars hope to continue to grow their networks and trouble shoot their business venture ideas with the experienced leaders in Seattle.

PROGRESS TO YEARLY GOALS

1. Branding of the Frank Scholars, closing the gap between the Scholars & the Institute

The student cohort has been holding bi-weekly, all-cohort meetings which have focused on defining the 5 W's of the  Frank Scholars. [Who, What, Where, When, Why] Moving forward the 2018-2019 cohort members are actively working to establish the brand, mission statement, and values of the Frank Scholars. The goals for the  monthly newsletter will be to increase communication with Frank Scholar alumni and to build out the Frank Scholars as a society extension of the institute.  If you have any feedback or suggestions, or if you would like to volunteer as a mentor please contact Lars Neuenschwander at lars.neuenschwander@wsu.edu

2.  Frank Day

The election board for the 2018-2019 Frank Scholars are in the planning stages of throwing an event for the current cohort and incoming cohort. The e-board wants to encourage collaboration and interdisciplinary team work. To meet these goals the e-board  introduced the concept of Frank Day. Frank Day is an all day event that will include speed networking, team building exercises, and introductions to the foundation of design thinking. If Harold Frank Alumni are interested in attending or contributing to the event please contact Internal Affairs Director, Hannah Zmuda at hannah.zmuda@wsu.edu

3. Cultivate relationships between board, students, and alumni through better communication & events

The student cohort is working to determine the best course of action for communicating the students' perspective to the board & other invested parties.  We believe in the mission of the institute and want to use the Frank Scholars' e-board as the advocates for the students' interests in the future of the institute.  We hope to learn more about the best ways of communicating the student's vision to the board through surveys, interviews, and trail-&-error.  If you have any feedback or suggestions, or if you would like to volunteer as a mentor please contact Lars Neuenschwander at lars.neuenschwander@wsu.edu

LARS NEUENSCHWANDER

President

My main goal for the Frank Scholars and the Washington State University community is to increase awareness about the entrepreneurial opportunities that Washington State University and the Harold Frank Entrepreneurship Institute can provide for students. Contrary to popular belief, an entrepreneurial skillset can be applicable in any field or job, and can benefit students from any major. There are so many invaluable resources that WSU offers to students that aren’t being fully utilized, I would like to change this. Together with my amazing team, we plan to increase student exposure to entrepreneurship,  connect Frank Scholars with opportunities that will benefit them most, build out the Frank Scholar Alumni Society, and ensure that the Frank Scholars will continue to represent WSU's best.

IAN MCDONALD

Director of Finance

My goal for this year is to fund two events per semester which bring together both cohorts. Ideally these events will serve as a bonding opportunity for the current cohort and a chance for newer Frank Scholars to take advantage of the experiences of the older cohort. Events may include resource nights, information nights for recruitment, and sponsoring a speaker to visit WSU.

HANNAH ZMUDA

Director of Internal Affairs

I am excited and honored to sit on the executive board for the Frank Scholars Program as the Director of Internal Affairs. In this role, my goal is to continue to build upon relationships with our alumni and build a mentor-mentee relationship between the current and incoming cohort. To accomplish these goals, I will be assisting our President t in scheduling and facilitating meetings with alumni. Additionally, I will be planning a  Frank Day that will facilitate mentor-mentee focused activities.

GENEVIEVE HARVEY

Director of Outreach

My executive role as Director of Outreach is to promote the program and build up the brand and reputation of the institute university wide. To achieve these goals I have ramped up recruitment efforts across the Voiland, Carson, and Murrow Colleges. A short 1 minute promotional video was created and displayed on screens throughout the colleges. Additionally, the current cohort coordinated to recruit for students in targeted classrooms. Throughout the year I hope to invite other colleges within WSU to join the application process and continue to provide up-to-date information through our newsletter.
